Melissa Hamilton is uniquely placed to bring energy, commitment and true independence to the role of Mayor of Southern Downs.
She is a breath of fresh air to the election line-up, for while Southern Downs local government elections are not run under a political party orientation, many councillors are known to have political affiliations.
“People want someone who is working for them, not for a party.”
“I’m not, and never have been, a member of any political party. As an independent I can push at every door – federal, state and private – to secure more investment in the district,” she said.
Melissa believes that nurturing a sense of unity within the council will advance and enhance the region.
“You’re there to act in the best interests of the community. That means working together to get things done.”
Melissa promises to bring professionalism and integrity to the role of Mayor. She also brings to the table the clarity of thought that has made her a successful commercial lawyer.
“The most important thing you learn as a lawyer is to put your personal opinions aside and do the best possible job you can for your clients.”
Melissa grew up in Central Queensland leaving home at 17 to study law in Brisbane. Her career took her overseas as well as within Australia.
“I’ve worked in a wide range of jobs, everything from FIFO for a mining and civil engineering company to company secretary of a regional Australian bank,” she said.
But the Southern Downs holds her heart.
“My partner Tom and I started holidaying at our block near Girraween in 2001. In 2016 when it was time to come home to Australia, we couldn’t wait to settle on the Southern Downs. There is nowhere else we’ve lived that has such a strong sense of community.”
