On Saturday the 11th of March 2023, the 1982, 83 and 84 Collegians ‘A’ Grade Warwick premiership winning sides celebrated with a reunion which was held at the Warwick Turf Club. The reunion was attended by about 30-40 people who shared stories and memories of a great time in their lives.
Darryl Aspinall who played in 83 & 84 travelled from southern New South Wales where he now lives, along with Grant Rix 1983 from Papua New Guinea where he works. Tony Edwards 1983 came from Melbourne along with many attending from Toowoomba, Brisbane, and Warwick itself.
The event was about celebrating the 3 premierships in a row which had only been achieved in the Warwick competition back in 1961, 62 and 63 by Allora. The St George Cup was the masterpiece of the reunion looking at teams from the past that played in the Warwick competition many years ago and having won the St George Cup, Clifton, Texas, Tenterfield, Stanthorpe, Tenterfield to name a few. It was interesting reading some of the names of teams on the St George Cup from years past. At one time the Warwick competition consisted of 16 teams, such as Killarney, Wallangarra, Tenterfield, Inglewood, Texas, Millmerran, Pittsworth, Oakey, Allora, Stanthorpe, Clifton, Suburbs and Collegians to name a few.
There was also a tribute to the lives of Peter Watt 82, 83 and 84, Robbie Rutledge 1983, Peter Kuschler 1982 and Ray Brown 1982 who have all sadly passed away. Members of all families attended this reunion except for Ray Browns family. It was a chance for everyone to meet and remember the good times in wining these premierships.
The venue and catering were excellent and everyone enjoyed the night. A few players who received special mention were - Peter Roser, Peter Watt, Terry Elford, Peter Ruhle and Lou Marshall who played in all 3 grand final wins.
There has been a suggestion that will try for another reunion in 10 years’ time 2033.
