Ron Bellingham leaves a legacy of leadership, resilience, and community service in the Southern Downs.
Known for humility, a strong work ethic, and genuine care, Ron devoted his life to serving the region. In business, government, or conversation, he made people feel heard and valued.
Born with a determination to succeed, Ron left school at 15 following the passing of his father and began a mechanical apprenticeship to help support his family. In 1958, with the support of his mother, he purchased a small farm machinery business in Killarney — the beginning of what would become Bellingham & Co. Through floods, storms, and hardship, Ron rebuilt the business time and again, growing it into a respected and long-standing part of the local community.
Ron’s commitment to the Southern Downs extended far beyond business. He served as an Auxiliary Fire Fighter, was heavily involved with the Warwick Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, Warwick Fire Board, tourism organisations, and many other community groups. In 2000, he was elected Mayor, later becoming the inaugural Mayor of the Southern Downs Regional Council in 2008, serving a total of 12 years in local government.
A lifelong learner with a passion for history, people, and conversation, Ron believed strongly in “Pride of Place” - encouraging communities to stay connected and proud of where they lived.
Those who knew Ron will remember not only his leadership and achievements, but also the simple conversations shared along the way.
He had a gift for making people feel important, whether through thoughtful advice, a story, or simply taking the time to listen. His presence within the Southern Downs community will be deeply missed.
Above all else, Ron valued family. A devoted husband to Kath, proud father, father in law, grandfather, great grandfather and friend, he will be remembered not only for what he achieved but for the kindness, wisdom, and steady presence he brought to so many lives.
