The Warwick Cowboys Rugby League Football Club entered a defining chapter in 1986, marking the beginning of the modern era of a club that would become deeply embedded in the identity of Warwick and the wider Southern Downs. Formed through passion, hard work and community spirit, the Cowboys quickly earned a reputation as a proud country club built on resilience, mateship and respect for the game.
Playing out of Father Ranger Oval, the Cowboys created a strong home base where generations of players pulled on the jersey with pride. The oval became more than a football field, it was a meeting place for families, lifelong supporters, volunteers and past players who all shared in the highs and lows of country rugby league. Through the late 1980s and 1990s, the club experienced periods of success and rebuilding, while continuing to develop local juniors and provide pathways to senior and representative football.
A defining tradition of the club has been the fierce but respectful rivalry with Wattles, highlighted by the annual contest for the Barrett Shield. More than a match, the Shield represents history, pride and mutual respect between neighbouring communities, often setting the tone for the season ahead.
In more recent years, the club faced one of its greatest challenges, with flooding impacting Father Ranger Oval.
From this adversity came one of its proudest achievements, the construction of a new flood-resilient clubhouse. Designed to protect the future of the club, the facility symbolises strength, foresight and determination. Built with the support of the community, it ensures the Cowboys are better prepared for whatever lies ahead.
At the heart of the Warwick Cowboys’ past, present and future are its supporters, past committees and sponsors.
Supporters have stood by the club through every era, while committee members have volunteered countless hours to keep the club alive and moving forward. Sponsors have backed the Cowboys not just financially, but with belief in what the club represents.
Together, these people have shaped the history of the Warwick Cowboys RLFC and will carry it well into the future, ensuring the club remains a proud symbol of Warwick for generations to come.
